Australian Made logoBuying Australian made and grown is important to all of us. Research conducted by Roy Morgan Research shows that a majority of Australian consumers prefer to buy goods that have been manufactured locally. Overall, 67 per cent of Australian consumers buy Australian made or grown products whenever possible or often. Preference for Australian food is particularly strong with 89% of consumers preferring to buy locally grown produce.

Carry the Australian Made Brand

The strong wish to buy Australian is neither new nor surprising.

Origins

The origins of the promotion of Australian made and grown goods date back to shortly after Federation when the merits of buying Australian made was advocated in Federal Parliament. In the 1930s the NSW Chamber of Manufacturers championed the cause of Australian Made in a major campaign and by 1961 the Australian Associated Chambers of Manufacturers of Australia founded a nationally coordinated campaign called 'Operation Boomerang'. The Campaign aimed to raise the profile of the manufacturing industry and encouraged people to buy locally made goods.

In 1986 a new era began for the promotion of goods manufactured in Australia. The Commonwealth of Australia commissioned a new logo and shortly after the now famous green and gold kangaroo triangle was introduced. The logo was designed by the world renowned designer Ken Cato and soon became a recognised and trusted symbol for goods that were truly Australian. In 1998 changes to the Trade Practices Act clarified country of origins rules and a new, independent, not-for-profit Australian Made Campaign to administer the green and gold logo was launched on 1 July 1999.

Message Remains the Same

Much has happened since the idea of promoting Australian products and produce was first born. Australia has become a valued and admired global player and our products are now shared with the world. The Australian industry has changed, but the Campaign message remains as relevant today as ever; as Australians we can be proud of who we are and of the goods we produce. Buying Australian is not just about helping our industry and creating a solid future for our children, it is also about getting quality products manufactured to our high standards. In essence, buying Australian is good for you.
