Wine Regions in Australia

Grape LeafAustralia has about 60 wine regions, which produce wine in every State and Territory. Northern Territory has just a single winery because it's climate varies from arid to tropical, while New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia are the major wine producing regions. If you only have a day to spare, no problems, because there is a wine region within easy driving distance of most capital cities. Group travel is available to visit several wineries in a day or more or you can drive around visiting each on at your own pace. Most wine regions cater to tourists and there are many options for budget travel and accommodation.

An Enjoyable Experience!

Many wineries have restaurants, children's play areas, art galleries, winery tours, accommodation and tours of local attractions. Enjoy tastings at the cellar doors and dine on local produce at winery restaurants. Along the way you will probably find other treasures to enhance your journey, such as chocolate & cheese factories, pottery and craft studios and wildlife parks. Wine regions often also go hand in hand with cottage industries, so you can make your holiday a real taste sensation!

World Class Excellence!

VineyardAustralia has an amazing diversity of regions and wine styles that are influenced by climates ranging from cold to cool to warmm, and, soil types vary from deep black volcanic loams to sandy soils over gravel and rich red clays over limestone. Australia's wineries are attracting 4.9 million tourists annually from both Australia and overseas. Of these there were 2.3 million visitors that were domestic overnight tourists, two million domestic day tourists and more than 500,000 international visitors, collectively pouring $A4.6 million ($US3.65 million) into the Australian economy. The Hunter Valley in NSW, the south-west of Western Australia, the Barossa in South Australia and north-east Victoria were among the most visited regions.

How to enjoy a good Wine in Australia

Tradition in Europe is to serve red wines at 'room temperature', which works very well in cooler climates. However, in an Australian summer, that would involve serving wine at 30degree celsius (86 degrees fahrenheit). Not exactly a pleasant way to enjoy wine. It's too warm and ruins the experience of drinking a fine red wine. The bottle should only be cool to the touch, but not cold, a 'cellar temperature' of 15 - 18 degrees celsius (59 to 64 degrees fahrenheit) is a good temperature. It's acceptable to cool your reds in the refrigerator for half an hour prior to serving. Whites however, are best enjoyed cooled on a hot day. Try not to chill them too far though, because the flavour doesn't emmerse until the chill has come off the wine.
