There used to be a slogan for the Northern Territory. "You will never ever know, if you never ever go", and that about explains it. It is one of those rare places on Earth that can't be put into words.
The Northern Territory lies within the tropics mainly consists of Savannah woodlands with pockets of rainforest, with a coastline that is mainly flat and backed by swamps, mangroves and mudflats, rising to a plateau no higher than 450 meters. In the north, monsoonal influences produce two definite seasons known locally as "the wet" (October to April), when the coast is subject to tropical cyclones, and "the dry" (May to September).
Darwin, the capital is situated in the north-western corner of the Territory. It is the only capital city in Australia that has suffered serious attacks during its history. The first being the Japanese bombing, and the second being Cyclone Tracy which completely leveled the city. This is why you will find a very modern city, but with strong community ties that are the result of its volatile history. The Northern Territory is also the most youthful population of all states and territories.
Destinations of interest for visitors include Kakadu National Park, Katherine Gorge, Kakadu, Melville Island, Kakadu, Arnhem Land, the Katherine Region and Ipolera, just to name a few! Other notable features of the Red Centre are King's Canyon, Ross River, Trephina, Ormiston and Glen Helen Gorge, the Olgas near Uluru (Ayers Rock) and the Devil's Marbles at Tennant Creek.
There are also other parks and reserves with abundant bird and animal life. However, the whole of the Northern Territory is one huge tourist destination. If your not visiting any one of the marvels of the Northern Territory, then you are being entertained by one of the many festivals or events that occur with great regularity. You could also, not only watch one of the many uniquely Australian sporting events, but you can also compete in them!
