Nestled just 24 kilometres east of Perth, Western Australia, John Forrest National Park is a haven of natural beauty and intriguing history. Among its most captivating features is the Swan View Tunnel, a site that promises adventure and a touch of mystery for its visitors.

The construction of the Swan View Tunnel, led by designer and architect CY O’Connor, required a workforce of over 300 men and extending over a year. With only basic tools such as picks, shovels, and dynamite at their disposal, the task was fraught with danger and immense challenges.

The Swan View Tunnel: A Historical Marvel

Construction of the Swan View Tunnel began in 1894 and was completed in 1896. The Swan View Tunnel was fraught with challenges from the very start. This 340-meter-long tunnel has seen its share of trials, contributing to its storied past.

The Swan View Tunnel, a remarkable engineering feat of its era, boasts a roof sealed with over 330,000 bricks. In 1945, a bypass was constructed around the tunnel, serving the line until its closure in 1966.

Haunted History and Legends

Local lore holds that the Swan View Tunnel is haunted by those who perished during its construction. The tunnel's eerie reputation is bolstered by tales of unsettling events that unfolded after it opened, leaving an indelible mark on its history.

Asphyxiation Incidents and Railway Challenges

The smoke and steam from the engines filled the confined space, causing passengers to experience severe breathing difficulties. A tragic incident in 1903 resulted in fatalities among train drivers and firefighters, further cementing its ominous reputation.

Ghostly Experiences Await
