Sydney is no stranger to celebrating its LGBTQ+ community. In fact, the city hosts two of the largest LGBTQ+ celebrations in the world: the annual Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, which takes place late February/early March; and Sydney WorldPride, a biennial event that will be held for the first time in 2023. Both events draw visitors from around the globe to celebrate queer culture with parades, music festivals, art exhibitions and more. So what makes these two events so special? Let’s take a closer look!
Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras (SGML)
The Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras is undoubtedly the biggest event of this yearly celebration. Taking place on Oxford Street, it features thousands of participants marching or riding in floats that are often outrageous and extravagant. But that’s not all—the week-long festivities also include drag competitions, film screenings and art installations. The theme for 2021 was “Rise” - an inspiring call for people to stand up for their rights, no matter who they are or where they come from.
Sydney WorldPride (SWP)
WorldPride is a larger-scale event than SGML as it only takes place every two years in different cities around the World. Sydney WorldPride will be held between Friday 17 February – Sunday 5 March 2023 in various locations across Greater Sydney, including Manly Beach and the Royal Botanic Gardens. This event will draw even more attention to Australia’s LGBTQ+ community as it invites international guests like politicians, activists and celebrities to join in on the fun. In addition to featuring some of SGML’s signature activities such as parades and art exhibitions, SWP will also feature workshops, performances by world-renowned musicians, panel discussions with thought leaders from around the world – plus lots more!
Sydney has long been home to two of the most important LGBTQ+ celebrations in the world — the annual Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras and biennial Sydney WorldPride — and both events continue to grow year after year. Whether you want to join in on these vibrant celebrations or just learn more about them from afar, there's something for everyone at SGML or SWP!
