The Cranky Rock Legend

The story of Warialda's Cranky Rock and the Chinaman has intrigued the people of Warialda for generations. No one claims to know exactly what happened, but a legend exists: A 'cranky' Chinese man murdered a Warialda woman. He was chased by the police but evaded capture by leaping to his death from the high rock. The tale claims that Cranky Rock received its name from the Chinese.

It is interesting to compare the legend with written records of the time. The Maitland Mercury, on 9th January 1875, carried an article from a Warialda correspondent. The article reported a most diabolical murder perpetrated in their midst. A poor woman named Mrs. Golthorpe was stabbed severely on the head, neck, and chest by a Chinaman named Charlie. She managed to rush for help but unfortunately succumbed to her wounds a few days later.

According to local accounts, Mrs. Golthorpe had quarreled with Charlie Young, the Chinese man, after warning her son not to play cards with him. In the aftermath, the Chinaman fled into the bush, and despite search efforts, all tracks were eventually lost. It is believed that he met his fate near Gragin Station, 30 miles from Warialda, as he was found dead. The circumstances surrounding his presence there remain unclear.

This tragic event has left its mark on Warialda, with the legend of Cranky Rock keeping the story alive through the years.
