Port Arthur is one of Tasmania's most popular tourist destinations located on the Tasman Peninsula. This hauntingly beautiful town was revealed to the world on April 28th 1996 when a lone gunman shot and killed 35 innocent people. Previous to this, Port Arthur was a penal colony where the British dumped over 12000 convicts into the newly built "escape proof" jail dubbed "Hell on Earth" from 1830 to 1870's. Here you can find sandstone prison buildings set amongst 40 hectares of spectacular scenery.
