Caravanning is popular among Australian holiday goers, but it doesn’t have to be a summer-only affair.

Caravanning is a beloved pastime throughout Australia, and winter offers plenty of reasons to hit the open road. With lower site costs and some of the best fishing spots at your fingertips, it's no wonder more and more holiday-goers are choosing winter for their caravanning adventures. However, it's crucial to be prepared for the harsh, cold weather that comes with the season, especially at night. But don’t let the cold get you down - with a few simple tips and tricks, you can stay snug and warm in your motorhome all winter long. Whether you’re travelling with family or friends, these tips will help you make the most of your wintertime caravanning experience.

Dress your caravan for the cold

Winter was right around the corner and I was excited to take my motorhome out on an adventure. However, as the temperatures started to drop, I realized that I needed to prepare my motorhome for the chilly season ahead. Just like we layer up with warm clothes, our beloved motorhomes need some extra insulation too. Investing in winter-weight curtains and draught snakes will keep the cold at bay. If you plan on spending a lot of time in your caravan during the winter, it's worth investing in insulation for the walls, roof and floor for optimal warmth and comfort. Don't forget to lay down some carpet and thick rugs to keep the cold air from seeping up from the ground and into your caravan. Trust me, with these simple steps, your motorhome will feel like a cozy winter retreat.

Create heat and trap it in

Upgrade your motor home with a reverse cycle air-conditioning system. Contact the manufacturer or a specialist caravan accessories supplier to get the job done.

If you're considering a LPG heater or any LPG appliances, you'll need a Gas System Compliance Certificate issued by a licensed LP Gas holder. This certificate is necessary for caravan registration. Make sure you comply with the Australian Standard for LP Gas installation, AS5601.

If installing heating in your caravan isn't an option, a portable space heater is a convenient alternative. It's affordable and can be placed anywhere in your caravan, like on a bench top or on the floor. Just remember, space heaters require energy, so ensure your caravan is connected to a powered site or power source.

Pick a prime sunny site spot

Choose a parking spot that ensures your caravan basks in the sun for the majority of the day. Before the temperature decreases, simply close the curtains. This will effectively trap the warmth your caravan absorbed from the sun, ensuring a cozy and comfortable interior.

Use heat to keep the condensation away

Experience condensation during caravanning? It's a common occurrence, especially in winter when the cold air meets moisture. But don't worry, we've got some tips to keep you warm, prevent condensation, and stave off mold. Run a heater overnight or during the coldest parts of the day - it might seem counterintuitive but it works! If running a heater isn't an option for you, try leaving a roof vent or window slightly open to allow for airflow. You can also place a few moisture absorbers in your portable home to help tackle excess moisture. Stay cozy and condensation-free during your caravanning adventures!

Transform your bed into a toasty haven

Get the perfect night's sleep with a high-quality, plush mattress. Investing in a thick mattress is totally worth it, as it provides extra insulation. To make it even cozier, add a winter mattress protector, a woolen underlay, extra blankets, and even an electric blanket or a hot water bottle. Don't have a bed? No worries, just layer up multiple sleeping bags.

Ward off the chills with warmth

Stay warm and create unforgettable memories with your loved ones by lighting a campfire at dusk. Embrace the cozy ambiance as you gather around the flickering flames, making the most of your time together until it's time to rest. With the added bonus of pre-warming your body, you'll drift off to sleep in pure comfort.

Warm up with a cuppa

Get cozy with a steaming cup of coffee or tea, guaranteed to warm you up. Start the day right by brewing a generous amount in the morning and keeping it hot all day in a thermos. And when it comes to comfort food, nothing beats a piping hot bowl of pumpkin soup.
